Why laser engraving is permanent (but still needs care)
When we laser engrave a tumbler, the beam removes the top coating and exposes the bare stainless steel beneath. That mark doesn't fade, peel, or wash off — it's physically etched into the surface.
What can degrade over time isn't the engraving itself — it's the surrounding powder coat or paint finish. Harsh detergents, high heat, and abrasive scrubbing can dull the area around the engraving and change the contrast. Good care preserves the whole look.
The basics: do this, don't do that
✓ Do
- Hand wash with mild dish soap — warm water, a soft cloth or sponge, done
- Rinse thoroughly after each use, especially if you used it for coffee or anything acidic
- Air dry upside down to prevent water spots inside
- Use a bottle brush for the inside — engraving is on the outside, interior just needs regular cleaning
✗ Don't
- Don't put it in the dishwasher — even if the brand says "dishwasher safe." High heat and commercial detergents can dull the finish around the engraving and fade powder coat colors over time
- Don't use steel wool or abrasive pads on the engraved area — they won't erase the mark but they will scratch the surrounding finish
- Don't soak it in bleach or harsh chemical cleaners
- Don't leave it in a car on a hot day for extended periods — extreme heat affects the powder coat
What about the engraved area specifically?
The engraved metal is exposed — no coating on top. That's by design. It won't rust under normal conditions because stainless steel is highly resistant to oxidation. But to keep it looking its best:
- Wipe the engraved area gently when cleaning — no need to scrub
- If you notice any dullness in the exposed metal over time, a light buff with a soft cloth is all it needs
- Avoid leaving the tumbler wet for long periods
Deep cleaning without damaging the engraving
For a thorough clean of the inside: fill with warm water, add a tablespoon of baking soda and a splash of white vinegar, let sit for 15–20 minutes, then scrub with a bottle brush and rinse well. This removes odors and buildup without touching the exterior.
For the exterior: a microfiber cloth with a small amount of gentle dish soap. Wipe in the direction of any brush texture on the metal. Rinse and dry.
How long does the engraving last?
Indefinitely, with normal care. We've seen tumblers that are 5–7 years old with engraving that still looks crisp. The mark is permanent. What fades over extreme time and misuse is the powder coat around it — not the engraving itself.
