What is K9 crystal?
K9 is a specific type of optical glass — highly transparent, with excellent clarity and light refraction. It's the same material used in high-end optical lenses and crystal awards. The name comes from its refractive index (K9 in optical glass classification), not from any connection to dogs — though we do a lot of pet portraits in it.
The crystal comes in various shapes: cubes, rectangles, hearts, iceberg forms, diamond cuts, and towers. The shape you choose affects how the image catches light inside it.
How the 3D engraving works
We use a process called subsurface laser engraving (SSLE). Here's the short version:
- Your photo is converted to a 3D point cloud — software analyzes the image and maps it as thousands of individual depth points
- A focused laser pulse fires into the crystal at precise X, Y, and Z coordinates — hitting specific points inside the glass without touching the surface
- Each pulse creates a microscopic fracture point — too small to see individually, but together they form the image
- The crystal remains perfectly smooth on the outside — the image is entirely internal
A single piece typically contains between 50,000 and 200,000 individual laser points, depending on size and detail. The process takes 15–40 minutes per piece.
What can you put inside?
Almost anything with clear visual contrast. The most popular subjects:
- Pet portraits — dogs and cats are our most common K9 crystal order. A clear, well-lit photo of your pet engraved in 3D is something people display for the rest of their lives
- Family portraits — wedding photos, anniversary shots, family photos with multiple people
- Landmarks and buildings — a custom home, a church, a skyline
- Logos and geometric designs — corporate awards and recognition pieces
- Memorial pieces — a photo of someone who has passed, engraved inside crystal, with an LED base that lights the image from below
What makes a good photo for K9 crystal?
The image quality going in determines the engraving quality coming out. Here's what works:
- Clear subject — the main subject (face, pet, building) should be in sharp focus
- Good contrast — the subject should stand out from the background
- Simple background — a plain or blurred background converts better than a busy scene
- High resolution — at least 300 DPI or a photo taken on a modern smartphone in good light
We do a 3D conversion preview before starting, so you'll see how your photo translates before we commit it to crystal.
The LED base
K9 crystal pieces are beautiful on their own. With an LED base they're extraordinary. The light enters the crystal from below and illuminates the internal engraving — the image glows from inside. The bases come in fixed white light or color-cycling RGB. Most customers who order without a base come back for one.
What K9 crystal costs
Prices depend on the crystal size and complexity:
- Small cube (2"×2"×2"): from $65
- Medium rectangle (3"×2"×1"): from $85
- Large piece (4"×3"×2"): from $120
- LED base: $20–$35 depending on style
Custom shapes, multi-image pieces, and portrait-grade conversions are priced on request.
